Tutorial III - Fundamental Concepts in Bioinformatics
Michael Raymer, Ph.D., Wright State University
Location: Shriver Center
Monday 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
This tutorial will present the basic concepts and fundamental algorithms underlying modern bioinformatics. From the
Central Dogma of molecular biology to the algorithms and statistics of BLAST searches, we will explore the experimental and algorithmic techniques that provide the basis for bioinformatics research. Specific topics include shotgun sequencing, sequence alignment, database search and significance scores, phylogenetic tree induction, PAM and BLOSUM matrices, protein structure modeling, and drug lead screening and docking.
